Make IE 7 look like IE 6

It sometimes amazes me how one day I can look 4 different times for something using Google and I can't find it but then I try the same query again the next day and *BAM* there is what I was looking for.

This is what I was looking for...

With IE 7 being pushed to desktops both in business at for people at home I went looking for a way to make IE 7 look more like IE 6 (mostly for the older people I work with... Some don't know how to use the basics of a computer, but anyway).

Less than computer savvy:

  • Open "My Computer"

  • Double Click the "C:" drive (or however it is called on your system)

  • Find your Windows directory, usually Windows, WinNT or something similar, now Double Click it

  • Look for a folder called ie7. If you cannot see it it may be hidden on your system. If it is hidden try going to your address bar and typing in "ie7" (without quotes at the END of the address line and then hit enter.

  • If Internet Explorer was installed using default information then you should be in the "C:\windows\ie7." folder.

  • Locate the iexplore.exe file then right-click on it then select send to
    desktop (create shortcut).

  • Close all your windows and view your desktop

  • Find the shortcut you just made and rename it to anything you want, then
    hit enter.

  • Double Click that shortcut and you will see Internet Explorer 7 looking
    like Internet Explorer 6!

For those who are more computer savvy:

There is a solution to make your IE7 look just like IE6.  Just follow
the this very simple tip.

  1. Navigate to the IE7’s installation directory. If you have selected the
default installation, it would be at C:\windows\ie7. (that's where it
    usually is)

  2. Locate the iexplore.exe file then right-click on it then
select send to desktop (create shortcut).

  3. By now, you’ll have a iexplore.exe shortcut icon on your desktop. Rename
    it to anything you want.

  4. Delete the original Internet Explorer desktop icon.

  5. Double-click on the new IE7 shortcut to launch Internet Explorer.

ie7 is the name of the backup folder used to store the old ie6. You aren't running ie 7 at all!

Check your version it is ie7 without tabbed browsing.

It's IE6. That folder is just a backup..

The version string read from the registry shows 7 so even 6 components show 7 as the version.. same as if you run 5.5 form the standalone version it will say 7.. but clearly isnt.

This is not a solution.. you are simply running the backup. A better idea is to uninstall 7 which is awful and those backup files are copied back to let you use 6 again.

What I was looking for and seems to have found... is IE7 stuff but with the IE6 look.

That is what happens when you open the exe file in the windows/ie7 folder.
